My name is Ric and I have been involved in the fishing industry for over 35 years. I am also a keen underwater fisherman and have represented Australia through Spearfishing on three separate occasions. I have also represented both Victoria and Australia in underwater hockey but I am too old for that now!
Diving underwater is my life. I have seen many things that most people would wonder about. No two days are the same in this work - I often see whales, orcas, dolphins and seals! The male seals can be quite aggressive when I am trying to work.
We of course come across sharks! I have only been bitten once. Seven-gilled sharks often get in the way and bump into me. Interestingly, I have never seen a great white shark in the water but I am positive they have seen me!
The sea-life and sea birds I see are amazing and join that with the amazing scenery, both in and out of the water, I am truly blessed.
Recently my son Liam has been working with me underwater which has been a great opportunity to share my passion with him. When we are both diving, we use a hookah T-Piece which is an air hose that runs right from the boat directly to each of our mouth-pieces to give us oxygen underwater.
