Abalone are an underwater snail which feeds on certain types of seaweed.
When catching abalone we search for areas that have wave surges, tidal flows and rocky areas predominantly in depths of less than 20 meters.
This is the main species that is caught. It is not uncommon for commercial catches to be in excess of 500kg. Black lip are often found near specific types of seaweed that they like to feed on.
There are various size-limits throughout Victoria. Black lip areas are broken into many different zones to allow for the varied growth and maturity rates that they have acquired due to food availability and sea-bottom habitat.
Green lip are the more prized species. They tend to live in areas with more tidal zones as green lip prefer to feed on the different seaweeds as they drift past.
